Decluttering your closet can seem impossible sometimes. To get a minimal closet, you must first work on changing your mentality. Then, get to sorting and make a keep, donate, and throw pile. When that’s done, ensure that everything is kept in its proper place.
If you’re a lover of clothes or have the tendency to hoard things you haven’t used – or even thought about – for years, then your closets are probably as cluttered as ours are. Closets also tend to get even more cluttered when the seasons change, and we’ve got all our summer and winter clothes shoved in there together.
Don’t worry, if you’re looking for motivation to declutter your wardrobe, we’ve got a few steps to help you do that. Follow these steps, and you will have a brand-new minimal closet!
Try and Change your Mentality
How you think about your clothes and all your material possessions plays a big role in the state of your closet and all your other rooms. You first need to have a minimalistic mentality to have a minimal closet. So, if you’re the kind of person that sees an old pair of pants and thinks you might end up wearing them someday, you need to rethink your mentality. Instead, ask yourself if you would keep those pants if you needed to fit all of your clothes into one single suitcase. Do those pants make the cut? The answer is: probably not!
Make 3 Essential Piles: Keep, Donate, Throw
When it comes to actually decluttering your closet and sorting through everything you own, start by pulling everything out of the closet first. Lay all your clothes out so you can see them and can have a better idea of just how many clothes you have – and that you don’t need!
Start sorting them into 3 piles. You’ll need to make a keep pile, a donate pile, and a throw (or perhaps recycle) pile. If you’re someone that has a hard time parting with old clothes, then the next step can help you with sorting your clothes into these 3 piles.
How Do You Decide What to Keep?
If you tend to keep things way longer than you need to, then you can ask yourself a few questions to help decide whether or not you should keep a certain article of clothing. If you see something you can’t decide on, ask yourself:
-
Does it fit you well?
-
When was the last time you wore it?
-
Do you remember you even had it?
-
Were you excited to find it again?
Answering these questions can help you decide whether you want to keep some clothes or donate or throw them away.
Ensure Everything Has its Place
Now that you know what you’re keeping, it’s time to put it all back into the closet. Try to assign different clothing items to their own separate places. For example, long dresses can be hung on one side of the rail, while smaller items like undergarments can be kept in baskets and organizers.
