Investing in creating a vertical garden can be costly unless you’re crafty enough to find an affordable alternative. One of the best ways to save money is creating your own DIY vertical garden that requires a few materials and is a great project for upcycling a wooden pallet.
Equipment:
-
Hammer and Nails
-
Staple Gun and Staples
Supplies:
-
1 Wooden Pallet
-
1/4 inch thick Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF)
-
Plants
-
Planting Soil
-
Sandpaper
-
Landscaping Paper
Instructions:
-
Start by prepping the wooden pallet by sanding down rough or sharp edges on the corners or other parts of the pallet.
-
If the pallet has no back panel, nail the MDF board into place with approximately 12 nails (this will help the soil from spilling out).
-
Create a fold doubling up the landscaping paper using the staple gun to secure the fabric along the back, sides, and bottom of the pallet.
-
Lay your pallet down flat and fill the pallet with soil through the remaining openings pressing down the soil firmly while leaving enough room for the plants.
-
Start to add plants starting from the bottom of the pallet and make sure each plant is packed in tight before moving to the next layer, working your way up the pallet.
-
Once you’re done planting, water evenly and lay the pallet down horizontally for two weeks to give your chance to take root.
-
After two weeks, you can stand your new DIY vertical garden upright for display.
-
Water regularly according to care instructions depending on the plants you used and enjoy!
This DIY vertical garden can be used with virtually any plant for a variety of uses. You can plant flowers for a decorative backyard feature, herbs for your own fresh herb garden, and even pest repelling plants for your outdoor entertainment area. This can be an easy solo project or a fun activity for the family that can get them interested in gardening too.
